MAITUM, SARANGANI —A total of 2,833 indigent senior beneficiaries have already been provided with social pension amounting to PHP3,000 equivalent to a six-month stipend, as of October this year by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office in the municipality of Maitum, Province of Sarangani.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has simultaneously released cash aid for indigent senior citizens under the Social Pension (SocPen) amid the ongoing programs being implemented due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
As provided in RA 9994 also known as the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010”, the SocPen for Indigent Senior Citizens is an additional government assistance that aims to improve the condition of indigent senior citizens by augmenting their daily subsistence and medical needs.
Senior citizens qualified to receive a social pension under the said RA are those frail, sickly, or with a disability, and are not receiving any pension from other government agencies without a permanent source of income or livelihood.
The LGU, on the other hand, assured the public that they adhere to existing safety and health protocols in the payout method to lessen the exposure of its beneficiaries and personnel to the coronavirus disease.
